Marine Greases
Marine greases are specialized lubricants designed for harsh marine environments and are categorized by their thickeners, such as lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, or aluminum complex. Key features include superior water resistance, protection against saltwater corrosion and rust, and excellent performance under high loads and temperature fluctuations. Other essential characteristics include oxidation stability and anti-wear additives to maintain performance and protect equipment like winches, bearings, and stern tubes.
Types: (H4)
- Lithium Complex: A common, multipurpose choice with good durability, stability, and protection against wear, corrosion, and oxidation.
- Calcium Sulfonate: Known for exceptional water resistance and corrosion protection, making it a top choice for marine applications.
- Anhydrous Calcium: Offers excellent water resistance and is effective in moist environments, although its water resistance is not as high as calcium sulfonate.
- Aluminum Complex: Used in high-temperature applications and offers good performance in marine environments.
- Barium Complex: A high-performance grease with excellent high-temperature resistance, heavy load-bearing capability, and water tolerance.
- Bentone (Clay) Grease: A clay-based grease that is non-melting and provides excellent water resistance and wear protection, used in extreme temperature applications.

- Water resistance: The primary feature, ensuring the grease doesn't wash away or break down in the presence of water, which is crucial for submerged parts like propeller shafts.
- Corrosion and rust inhibition: Special additives protect metal surfaces from corrosion caused by saltwater contamination.
- Oxidation stability: Prevents the grease from degrading due to heat and air, helping to extend the life of the lubricant.
- High load-carrying capacity: Additives like Molybdenum Disulphide (MoS2) or graphite allow the grease to withstand extreme pressures and heavy loads common in marine machinery like winches and cranes.
- Thermal stability: Maintains viscosity and consistency across a wide temperature range, from cold to hot conditions, preventing breakdown or thickening
- Adhesion: Tackifiers help the grease cling to metal surfaces and prevent it from being thrown off by rotational forces.
- Wear protection: Anti-wear additives form a protective film between moving parts to reduce friction and wear.
